Einst glaubte Kenshirou, endlich sein Glück gefunden zu haben, nachdem er seine große Liebe und bald Verlobte Yuria kennengelernt hatte, doch ausgerechnet Shin, sein Freund und Rivale im Kampf, verrät ihn. Kenshirou, von Shin bezwungen, gedemütigt und gezeichnet, überlebt den Verrat und beginnt eine Reise, um seine Verlobte zu befreien und Rache an Shin zu üben. Kenshirou ist der rechtmäßige Erbe der Hokuto-Schule und verfügt dadurch über beachtliche Kampfkünste, und die kann er in dieser lebensfeindlichen Welt auch gut gebrauchen – einer Welt, die durch Atomkrieg völlig verwüstet wurde und in der konventionelle Waffen praktisch bedeutungslos geworden sind. Das Recht des Stärkeren regiert, und wer die Kampfkunst beherrscht, gehört zu den Überlegenen.

Auf seiner Suche nach Yuria ist Shin, der Erbe der Nanto-Schule, aber nicht Kenshirous einzige Hürde. Er muss sich einerseits mit weiteren Anhängern dieser rivalisierenden Schule herumschlagen, andererseits zieht er immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit auf sich und bekommt es mit diversen grausamen Tyrannen zu tun, die dank genetischer Modifizierung praktisch zu humanoiden Monstern geworden sind. Kenshirou bleibt nichts anders übrig, als sich seinen Weg freizukämpfen, aber da ist auch noch sein ältester Bruder Raoh, der immer mehr Teile der Welt unterwirft und Kenshirou nicht als würdigen Erben der Hokuto-Schule betrachtet. Kann Kenshirou lange genug überleben, um sein Ziel zu erreichen und die zu beschützen, die ihm wirklich wichtig sind?
