Der neun Jahre alte Ren hat vor kurzem seine Mutter verloren und weil sein Vater nichts von ihm wissen will, lebt er seither auf der Straße im Tokioter Stadtteil Shibuya. Eines Tages betritt er aus Versehen das Reich der Biester, Jutenga genannt. Während Ren verzweifelt umherirrt und nach dem Weg zurück in seine Welt sucht, trifft er auf Kumatetsu, einen Schwertkämpfer mit dem Aussehen eines Bären. Es dauert gar nicht lange, da finden die beiden zueinander und Kumatetsu ernennt Ren, oder »Kyuuta«, wie er ihn nennt, zu seinem Schüler und bringt ihm die Kunst des Schwertkampfs bei.
