Ginga Tetsudou 999
In einer fernen Zukunft hat die Menschheit weite Teile der Galaxie erschlossen. Wohlhabende Menschen können es sich leisten ihr Bewusstsein in Maschinenkörper zu transferieren und deswegen Unsterblichkeit erlangen. Arme Menschen dagegen verelenden in den Slums und träumen von der Unsterblichkeit. Der Halbwaise Tetsurou Hoshino kommt mit seiner Mutter nach Megalpolis, wo er mit ihr gemeinsam Geld verdienen möchte, um mit dem Weltraumzug Galaxy Express 999 zum fernen Planeten Groß-Andromeda zu reisen. Dort sollen Maschinenkörper angeblich in Hülle und Fülle vorhanden sein, sodass auch ihnen Unsterblichkeit vergönnt sein kann. Doch bevor sie Megalpolis erreichen, wird seine Mutter von Graf Mecha erschossen. Tetsurou wird vergraben im Schnee von der blonden Frau Maetel aufgelesen und gerettet. Als er erfährt, dass die Mörder seiner Mutter sich in der Nähe befinden, macht er sich auf und tötet sie. Dabei wird er von der Cyber-Polzei gejagt und wird abermals von Maetel gerettet. Diese hat ein Pass für den Galaxy Express 999 und ist bereit ihn Tetsurou zu geben, wenn sie ihn auf seiner Reise begleiten darf, denn der Junge hat den Traum zur Unsterblichkeit nicht aufgegeben. Fortan reisen die beiden mit dem Galaxy Express 999, der das Aussehen eines alten Dampfzuges hat.
